A good offsite does two things a normal quarter cannot: it gets the whole team in one room for uninterrupted thinking, and it gets them into unstructured time together afterwards. Almost every failed retreat fails on the second one — the schedule is so full that nobody ever just talks.
Why Costa Rica, and why the central Pacific
San Jose is a direct flight from most North American hubs, and the time zone matches US Central for most of the year, so the parts of the business that stay home are not stranded. Jaco is ninety minutes from the airport on a good highway — close enough that the travel day does not consume a day of the retreat.
Guanacaste and the Osa Peninsula are wonderful and much further. For a four-day trip, transfer time is budget.
A house beats a conference hotel
Hotels sell you a meeting room with a per-person catering minimum and scatter your team across floors. A private estate gives you fifteen ensuite bedrooms, communal spaces you can reconfigure however you like, a kitchen and long tables where the whole team eats together, and no other guests. The conversations that justify the trip happen in the kitchen at eleven at night, not in the breakout session.
